Pinch Pots & Snowmen

First Graders used white clay and had the option to add a creature face to their pinch pots.

Kindergarten artists used red clay and were able to turn their pinch pots into different shapes.

While the pinch pots were in the kiln we painted snowmen. 

Fall Pumpkins

We  started this lesson by using our Artist Eyes to look at a few pumpkins. We also passed around a pumpkin to see where the lines start and end in order to have a better idea how to draw the Contour lines and make our Pumpkins look more Realistic.  We talked about how those Contour lines are what make our drawings look more like a pumpkin and less like an apple. We also talked about how pumpkins do not float in the sky and how Artists use an Horizon Line to show that objects are either in the sky or on the ground. We then started our paintings, the process included pencil, sharpie, oil pastels and water color paints. When students finished their paintings they had the opportunity to repeat the steps on drawing a pumpkin and then cut it out to glue onto the Rowe School Pumpkin Patch which you can come see out in the hallway.

COLOR and TEXTURE

For the start of the school year we have been talking about Color, focusing on the Primary and Secondary Colors and Texture. Here are a few projects we have done so far .

The Rowe School Puzzle, all of the Rowe students and teachers made a puzzle piece

We read The Dot and made our own Primary and Secondary Dots

We read Mouse Paint and then made our own Mouse paintings, making sure to leave a spot for our mouse to hide.

Leaves are falling and are the perfect item for Texture rubbings.

Fall Trees
We used many different colors on top of each other to show the Texture of our trees and used Primary color paints to mix the Secondary colors for the leaves.

Weaving in Different Forms

Over the last few weeks both the Kindergarten and First grade artists have been learning how to weave. We started by learning the terms; Loom, Warp and Weft. We then created our own paper Weavings while repeating in our head the words "over-under-over-under" to help give us the tell-tale checkerboard Pattern.

After finishing the paper weavings we worked on something a little trickier, Weaving in the Round on a paper cup.

"Painting with scissors" Quote by Henri Matisse

We chose two Primary colors and the Secondary color they make for our color scheme to create flower collages. We first talked about what a Collage is and looked at some work by artist Henri Matisse and author/illustrator Eric Carle. We have spent the last couple classes cutting out petals, stems and middles and are now planning the Composition and gluing our pieces together to create Spring Flower Collages.

Magical Creatures

***Clay Sculptures are ready to go home***

The 3-Dimensional Magical Creature Sculptures are very fragile. It would be great if you could head in to the Rowe art room to pick up your child's piece.

March is Youth Art Month

Magical Creatures

For this two-part project we first looked at images of 4 different Magical Creatures and then chose two to practice drawing. We will be doing a 2-Dimensional drawing/painting and a 3-Dimensional Clay Sculpture of the same creature. 

Cityscapes

We talked about Abstract art and looked at the painting Castle and Sun by Paul Klee and artwork by James Rizzi of Times Square. After reading the book Wow City, the Rowe artists had their inspiration to get started on their own Abstract CityScapes.
