Extra Art

WHAT IS “EXTRA ART”?
**Extra Art is a series of art classes in which every first-grade class participates for half of the year. This series is devoted to creating large-scale paper mache sculptures. This project  requires extra storage space and a longer process time with more steps than we would normally include in our regular art curriculum.
*Volunteers are very helpful for this larger scale project.

GETTING STARTED:
The students looked through different animal books to find an animal they are interested in. They then do a large line drawing of the animal.
  Next step Newspaper armatures:
The drawings are then used as a guide to create 3-Dimensional newspaper forms.
   PAPIER MACHE STEPS:
Step 1 & 2): Newspaper armatures (basic shapes) are created
Step 3 & 4): The first few layers of “goop” (newspaper/white paper strips) are
                           applied.
Step 5 & 6): The last layer of gooped strips, colored paper, is applied.
Step 7 & 8 ): Paint is used to add Pattern/Texture and Facial Details.

***The children LOVE this lesson! And they learn very clearly that artists work in steps in a process to create their final product, and that it takes TIME.  It is their chance to create a truly difficult and rewarding piece of artwork, and they have a lot of fun as they see it develop week to week.
